President George and First Lady Laura Bush received a private tour of Gettysburg Battlefield on Friday. Just about every newspaper in the country is reporting the story now. That should give the area big boost for the fall tourism season.

The Bush’s tour guide was Professor Gabor Boritt, a history professor at Gettysburg College. Boritt is also the director of the Civil War Institute at the college. Boritt took the president and first lady through the first, second, and third days of the battle and visited Little Round Top, Gettysburg National Cemetery, and other battlefield sites. The trip took two hours.

The Bush’s were accompanied by Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Some visitors to Gettysburg witness the president while they were in Gettysburg. For some, including the president’s tour guide, it will likely be a highlight of their lives.

My thoughts? If a trip to Gettysburg is good enough for the president, isn’t it good enough for you?
