Our adventure this past week to find a strawberry farm where we could pick berries was quite exciting. The one we picked strawberries at last year has gone out of business. But the gentleman on his front porch was kind enough to point us in another direction. So we drove. About 20 minutes. They didn’t allow us the opportunity to pick our own.

That was too bad because they could have had some business. So we drove again. This time about 40 minutes in the opposite direction to another farm that we thought might allow us to pick our own berries. Nope. And what was worse, they were selling quarts at grocery store prices. A farm, mind you.

We weren’t up to paying grocery store prices for strawberries. So we went home and called some relatives. “Do you know where we can pick berries?”

“No,” Grandma said. “But we’ll check around.”

In 24 hours, we’d found a good lead. Followed up on it yesterday and found that they do indeed allow berry-pickin’ and it starts at 8 a.m. Monday-Saturday. Guess where I was at 8 a.m. this morning? Yep, in a strawberry patch.

If you’ve never picked strawberries, you’re in for a real treat. Less than $2 per quart and a quart goes a long way. We picked 31 quarts in one hour. My wife and I and our daughter. Oh what fun. I’m a farmer!

Well, maybe not quite a farmer. But I can pick berries once a year. And it will soon be raspberry season, and everyone around here looks forward to picking apples. If you’re around during harvesting season then you might consider picking berries and other farm-grown fruit for your family’s needs.
