Happy Birthday Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Cats: Churches, Emmitsburg, Events, History|Emmitsburg is the home of the Basilica at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, who was canonized on September 14, 1975 by Pope Paul VI. Starting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2008, Rev. Michael J. Kennedy, C.M., Seton Shrine Chaplain, will begin mass and the canonization ceremony.
The event is sponsored by the Seton Club of Harrisburg and the Daughters of Charity at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Seton is recognized as the founder of Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s, which is the first religious order for women established in the U.S., and Saint Joseph’s Academy and Free School.
Seton was the first person born in the U.S. to be canonized and her remains are buried in the Basilica at Emmitsburg.
