From October through March, a federal program is allowing deer hunting at the Gettysburg National Military Park and the Eisenhower National Historic Site, but only qualified federal employees will be allowed to shoot deer.

According to a National Park Service study conducted in 1995 concluded that the military park in Gettysburg had 333 deer per square mile, but experts claim that the park can only contain 25 deer per square mile. Therefore, a 10-year program was put in place to reduce deer by shooting. Venison from the hunts will be donated to Gettysburg area food banks.
