The superintendent of Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg says that ghost walkers are trespassing on the cemetery property at night. The problem is, it’s a private cemetery and besides property rights issues, there are safety issues. The cemetery is 153 years old and sits right next to the National Cemetery, which is a public cemetery owned by Gettysburg National Military Park. People confuse the two all of the time.

Tourists show up to tour the Evergreen Cemetery at night, impede traffic along Baltimore street, and make a lot of noise as well as take photos. This is bothersome to some local residents and the caretakers of the cemetery, who say that it is disrespectful of the dead.

This problem can be alleviated by tourists taking the time to learn which cemeteries are public and which ones are private and asking a knowledgeable local organization like the people at the Gettysburg Visitor Center which cemeteries are open for private tours.
