About
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is a town rich with history. When most people think of Gettysburg they automatically conjure up images of North-South conflicts and families torn apart by war. But there is more to this small community in Adams County, Pennsylvania than Lincoln’s famous words, which have come to be known as the Gettysburg Address. This blog may share some interesting highlights on those events of our distant past from time to time, but that won’t be the focus of the blog.
Our interest is merely in the community itself. What makes Gettysburg so special? Who are the people here and what makes them tick? Why do people flock to Gettysburg every year to walk a battleground that no longer flows with warm liquid? Who are they and what motivates them in their lives?
If you’ll picture the features section of your local hometown newspaper, that’s what the Gettysburg Pennsylvania Blog is about. We are about the people and places that keep this historic location moving. It is about you. And about the old man next you. And the young lady sitting next to him.
Why? Why Gettysburg?
Good question. I am originally from Texas. Dallas, Texas. Home of the world famous Dallas Cowboys – and J.R. Ewing. My wife is an Altland, born and raised in this area.
As a National Guard officer, my unit was activated in 2004 and I spent all of 2005 in Iraq. While deployed, my wife moved us up here to be close to her family. When I returned we stayed. That was a good plan because I love it here. I am a mountain man at heart.
In the last couple of years I’ve learned a bit about the area and love to share what I find. I like meeting new people and talking about their lives. I was a newspaper editor in Texas so I have some experience with that. I started the Gettysburg Pennsylvania Blog to allow me to do something that I enjoy – talk to people and write about their lives – and to provide visitors to Gettysburg, or people considering visiting Gettysburg, an opportunity to see what else this community has to offer besides a two-hour driving tour of ground once covered by sweat and tears.
So I give you this, my gift to Gettysburg, its citizens, and its visitors, in hopes that I might entertain, inform, and enlighten. May you find it as much a joy to read as I do to write.

Hello Allen,
I found Gettysburg Blog today and really enjoyed it.
I’m an Associate at Himmelrich PR. We are currently working for the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival in Oaks, PA. I thought you would be interested in sharing information about the festival on your blog.
The festival will take place March 20-22 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA and will feature over 300 artists in pottery, sculpture, glass, jewelry, fashion, home décor, furniture, home accessories, and photography. It’s a truly unique craft show, where you’ll find $20 gemstone earrings next to one-of-a-kind wooden bowls selling for thousands of dollars. Some crafters at the show have exhibited in museums, some have sold their work to celebrities, but all share the passion for original, handmade art.
If you would like more information and images to use on your blog, please let me know and I’ll be happy to provide them. Also, I can send you tickets to the show if you’re interested in attending.
Thanks,
Rebecca
Hello,
As a community blog site, I was hoping that you may consider covering the I Can! Challenge – a free 12-week program geared towards helping those with heart disease or diabetes in York and Adams counties improve their health. The Challenge has teamed up with FOX 43 News and features five local residents with these conditions going through the Challenge step by step. Each week, the Challengers are given a new “challenge” – whether it be portion control, exercise, talking with their doctor, reducing stress, etc. The public is encouraged to follow along at home by either registering online or calling a toll free number. I would be happy to send you the full press release if you are interested in learning more

Awww, Allen!
Just happened upon your blog, and you goooo! It is great. Do you host events? Several of the folks are hosting (2nd year) a Childrens’ Charity Holiday Open House in Gettysburg. There is no charge to the public other than donations gladly accepted. Last year, with the economy heading downhill fast, I felt a big squeeze around the heart and soul to give something back to others. I remember being one of six and growing up just wishing for something special for Christmas and that’s where this dream for Home For The Holidays II Event came from. You’ll find this on a few calendars, on the Travel Center and as the good wood Twitters away. Last year, this little Bungalow hosted nearly 70 folks just passing through! Of course, the display of childrens WWWII era toys in the rear yard of the downtown Bungalow alongside a “Christmas Story” Leg Lamp didn’t hurt the draw of folks. Anyway, amidst C-9 lights of the era, a Sentimental Journey, Adams County Downtown Winery, USCC, Home Front General Store and Cafe Saint Amand are a few who will open their doors with a big heart and a warm welcome. Will you spread the word about this Childrens Christmas Charity? Could you spare a corner of your Blog to help us reach out to others? And, if you’d like a Norman Rockwell Christmas visit…come on down to Quite The Stir, I’m Jolene and I’d be honored to meet you! Keep up your passions, the blog is wonderful!
