The Gettysburg Pennsylvania area is full of creative craftsmen. One such crafts person is blacksmith Robert L. Meckley, who owns and operates Pigeon Hill Forge near Abbottstown, which isn’t far from Gettsyburg Borough.

Among the fine handcrafted wrought iron products Meckley makes are wine racks, wall hooks, dinner bells, and other wine-related products. These home decor items are all hand forged using the best wrought iron available and Robert Meckley is the man behind the blacksmithing.

Local Beer: Tour The Appalachian Brewing Company

January 26th, 2009 | Posted in Business, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Restaurants, Tours

One of the favorite attractions of visitors to the Gettysburg Pennsylvania area is the Appalachian Brewing Company. Located on Buford Avenue in Gettysburg, the restaurant and bar are an extension of the original brewing company located in Harrisburg. Still, the beer is great and the food is awesome.

The Gettysburg microbrewery doesn’t schedule tours, but you can stop in and take a “guided visit.” There is also an ABC in Camp Hill Pennsylvania just a short stretch up the road between Gettysburg and Harrisburg. However, if you really want to see a site then show up at the Harrisburg plant at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a schedule tour. Be early because many times they have more tourists than they can handle and you’ll have to wait a week.

The Harrisburg Appalachian Brewing Company is located at 50 N. Cameron St. in Harrisburg. For more information on touring the facility call 717-221-1080.

Local Businesses Are Targeted In ADA Lawsuits

January 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Business, Gettysburg

Three local businesses are the target of an American With Disabilities Act lawsuit brought forward by a Maryland woman. Those businesses, according to an article in the Gettysburg Times, are Codori House of Gifts on Lincoln Square, Wentz Stained Glass Studio on York Street and The Spirited Ladies Shoppe on Chambersburg Street. The woman who filed the lawsuit is named Marilynn Phillips.

I’m not sure how long Ms. Phillips has been pursuing these businesses to get in compliance with the ADA, but it seems that she has had some success with some local businesses. Handicapped persons who find difficulty in accessing some of the historic places in Gettysburg should contact the appropriate agency to complain. The federal historic sites in Gettysburg seem to have no issue.

The problem for many businesses is that they have to meet certain city codes in order to modify their businesses. If those codes are a stumbling block to compliance for those businesses then Ms. Phillips, or others, may end up targeting the borough rather than go after the individual businesses. But before that happens Ms. Phillips and her attorney will have to navigate through the discovery phase of her lawsuits with the individual businesses. This is an issue I think that affects all of us, handicapped or not.

Gettysburg Traffic Gets Boost Due To Inauguration

January 20th, 2009 | Posted in Battlefield Sites, Business, Gettysburg, Hotels, washington d.c.

President Barack Obama’s inauguration today has given the local economy a big boost. In fact, many people have found that the closest hotel they could find to Washington D.C., the location for today’s ceremony, is in Gettysburg. That’s good news to local hoteliers, other businesses, and the economy as a whole.

If you are staying in Gettysburg and drove down to the nation’s capital to see the inauguration of the nation’s first black president then we hope you stick around a few more days and see what else we have to offer besides a few hotels. Stop and see the battlefield while you’re in town. Better yet, take the two-hour tour.

You might also want to visit the Eisenhower Farm. And be sure to make your way to Hanover and see the walking tour of the Battle of Hanover in the town square. There’s plenty to do here. Stick around a couple of days and explore Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Find out what you’ll want to do no your next visit here.

Steinwehr Avenue Traffic Is Dwindling

January 8th, 2009 | Posted in Business, Gettysburg, Museums, Shopping

Located on the south side of Gettysburg is Steinwehr Avenue, what once was the location of the Gettysburg Visitor Center. Before moving to the other side of town, on Baltimore Pike, the visitor center drew lots of visitors to Steinwehr Avenue. But now the Gettysburg roadway gets little traffic and businesses there are hurting. So borough officials are discussing a revitalization plan.

The Gettysburg Visitor Center and Museum relocated last April. Since then, Gettysburg businesses on Steinwehr Avenue have seen a decline and the borough has not seen the revenue from the new center that it thought it would. So borough officials are trying to get a handle on the money.

Well, at least they’re not saying that tourism is dead. People are still coming to Gettysburg. They’re just not going to Steinwehr Avenue.

Irish Music Returns Monthly To Gettysburg Pub

January 7th, 2009 | Posted in Arts, Business, Gettysburg

If you like good Irish folk music and Killian’s Red then you’ll love the local Irish pub – The Garryowen. Every First Sunday, a group of local musicians gather at the pub for traditional folk music and a jam session. They’d like you to join them.

You don’t have to play an instrument or sing. You can just listen. But if you do play or sing then you’re welcome to chime in. The pub is located at 126 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg just a block and a half away from the square.

The Garyowen is a traditional Irish pub with a great atmosphere and a great place to meet new friends. They feature local bands that play country music, R&B, rock and roll, jazz, and a variety of other music styles. If you’re in Gettysburg on any First Sunday of any month, stop in and say hello to the crew and join in the traditional Irish folk singing. It’s just good fun.

Gettysburg Ghost Tour Companies May Be Skirting Taxes

January 2nd, 2009 | Posted in Business, Gettysburg, Tours

Happy New Year from Gettysburg Pennsylvania Blog!

It seems that some ghost tour companies may be evading borough tax levies. At least, some borough officials think so. I read this in the local newspaper Gettysburg Times.

I don’t know what the penalty is if the borough decides that some of these companies aren’t paying local taxes, but I’d bet they won’t be doing business any more. The borough evidently has a right to audit the companies and it seems they are considering this. If they do so and find that taxes aren’t being paid then we could see a shake down. The tax money owed will likely be confiscated (though I don’t know how a local borough government will be able to handle that without a court’s assistance) and some of the companies will have to decide whether or not it is profitable to stay in business. This may or may not be good news for tourists. I’m sure the ghosts could use a little respite.
